With the increasing number of people being troubled by hair problems such as hair thinning and balding, hair transplantation has become widely popular. Hair transplantation essentially refers to the surgical removal of hair follicles from the part of the scalp that is resistant to hormonal changes and hair fall (the back and the sides), known as the ‘donor area’ and, replanting them on the bald patches or areas with scanty hair, known as the ‘recipient area’.Click here

Naturally, hair grows in groups of two to four. These groups are called ‘follicular units’ which are harvested for transplantation. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) are the two most commonly practiced hair transplantation methods around the world.

FUT or ‘strip harvesting’ involves surgically removing a strip of skin bearing the hair follicles from the posterior of the scalp and dissect it further into tiny strips. These dissected follicular units are then planted in the recipient area using microneedles. This process leaves behind a linear scar in the donor area and the recovery period is around two weeks.

FUE, on the other hand, requires directly removing individual follicular units from the donor area using local anesthesia. The hair follicles are randomly selected and are extracted by microneedles with a diameter ranging between 0.5-0.8 mm. Since the hair follicles are extracted individually, there are hardly any visible marks or scars caused by this procedure and the recovery time is also very less, usually five to six days. This process is more time consuming than FUT.

Aesthetic Hair Implants (AHI) is one more method that’s fairly new but has completely overhauled hair implants procedure. It’s much more advanced and uses state-of-the-art techniques to implant hair. The hair planted using this technique are guaranteed to stay longer and look natural and aesthetic. Trichologists Dr. Apoorva Shah and Dr. Sonal Shah have introduced this procedure in India. The AHI technique uses a patented implanter pen that allows implantation of a much higher number of grafts / hairs per sq. cm. than the traditional methods. The hair planted starts growing post 2-3 months after treatment at the rate of ½ cm/month. Noticeable changes can be observed in 6-8 months.

India is one of the most popular destinations for hair transplantation, and there are numerous clinics all over the country offering a wide range of hair treatments. The cost of hair transplantation procedures is quite reasonable and affordable in most high-end clinics in India. Although it is difficult to state the exact numbers, yet the average pricing of hair transplantation procedures can be mapped out. The cost per graft can range anywhere between 30-100 INR. Including the lab charges, post-care kit charges, and other such facilities provided by reputed clinics in the country, the total cost of hair transplantation can be around 45,000 to 2, 00,000 INR. It is essential to keep in mind that the cost of these procedures depends on factors like the popularity of the surgeon, the location of the clinics, and of course, the baldness level.
